The Problem Of Fake Pagerank

The problem of fake pagerank has plagued Google for the past couple of years now. And google seems not too adamant about doing anything about this problem. Meanwhile thousands of people are being duped into buying domains and websites which seem to be very high quality but end up with buyer's remorse when they realize after a Google PR update that their PR had been faked. In this post I shall explorer how pagerank is faked and ways you can protect yourself from ever being conned by fake pagerank.

How Fake Pagerank Came To Be

It started with a Google pagerank feature of being able to point the googlebot to your new website in case you change your domain name. This is a problem that had stopped many webmasters from moving their websites to new better fitted domains for their websites. They didn't want to lose all of the precious pagerank they had attained over the years just so they can get a better domain. So the ever helpful Google came up with a seemingly easy solution. The answer: 301 or 302 redirects to the new domain. That way your old website would be redirected to your new one and your pagerank along with it. But one thing they didn't count on was the fact that this worked both ways. So now if your new website had a pagerank it would be transfered to your old domain.

The funny thing in all of this is of course the fact that the new website doesn't have to have your code in order to be fast forwarded to through a 301 or 302 redirect. SO in essence you can redirect to any website you wanted regardless of who owned it. So users started redirecting their unfinished or private websites to Google so as to make sure a visitor isn't disappointed by the default list of files. But something funny happened when they did this. When they checked their pagerank after a pagerank updated it had changed to 10 or Google's pagerank. This astounded some of these users and the news spread fast.

Now all kinds of people fast forwarded their domains to Google to try to get that PR10. It was quickly found out however that after the next update when you had removed your redirect to try to show off your allegedly PR10 website your web site's PR went back to zero. This made users shy away from using this method for a while. But then domain sellers caught wind of this and realized the potential for it. It went something like this. Buy a new domain redirect it and wait till it gets that PR10 then change it back to your website and sell it quick before the next PR update. And here is the current problem as they have gotten smarter and started redirecting to lower Pr websites such as PR4 to PR7. This made the PR more believable as only about 3 websites have PR10.

How To Detect a Fake Pagerank

This is relatively easy as long as the faker hasn't changed his website back to it's original and still has the redirect going. Or even if he just changed it recently and Google hasn't had a chance to update it's cache yet. Basically all you do is check the web site's cache in Google and check to see if it matches the website showing in your browser. If it doesn't match then the pagerank is faked. There even is some tools that have been recently made to check for this here's one:

Enter URL

Another method is to check the site's info: query in Google. If the result doesn't match the website then it's fake. Or sometimes if it doesn't have a result it's also fake. As it should since it has a pagerank. This method is relatively new however and for the most part hasn't been proven quite as much as the first one so be careful on making your final decision about a website.

And the last method that probably won't be of any use is to check the archive.org's archives. If you use archive.org to view the site's history and the address and the URL changes when you click to view a result, then the domain was being redirected on that date.

Example: anysite.com on November 21 2007. http://web.archive.org/web/20071121...www.anysite.com/

In this example the end of that URL changes to another domain name, meaning that on the date the site was archived the domain was being redirected. But the reason why I say this is just about useless is the fact that archive.org rarely archives any website except major websites. Which means any website in their archives is almost guaranteed to be reliable.

But remember none of these methods is 100% foolproof since the faker could have turned the redirect off earlier.

What To Do When You Find a Fake Pagerank

Immediately notify Google and send me a comment telling of how I saved you from buying a fake website.

So How Will The Problem of Fake Pagerank Be Solved

Well there are two ways this problem could be solved. Either Google can make sure the pagerank isn't transferred from the new website to the old or it can ban any website that sets a 301 or 302 redirect specifically for the googlebot. Since users who are moving their whole website don't need to just redirect the googlebot but the whole website itself.

Conclusion: The Problem Of Fake Pagerank

In conclusion this problem seems to be unsolvable unless caught at the right time. So the best thing one can do is make sure that when buying a website or domain you don't base your decision on pagerank. Do it like back in the old days when there was no pagerank and do some research on your own and and use pagerank as just another factor.

Introducing SEO News Blog

Remember a while ago I said that I was going to move this blog to it's own domain? Well plans were changed and I decided instead to create a new blog sorely based on SEO it's called SEO News Blog and it will be officially launched in a week or two.

SEO news blog will focus on all aspects of the SEO industry and leave this blog to focus sorely on google adsense as it should be in the first place. So yes this is a major change and I'd like to let all my regular visitors know that I am sorry about this. But this whole thing has been bum rushed as I don't have much in terms of time this Christmas season. And I wanted the launch to go with the new Christmas season. So please bear with me as all these changes take place.

Thank You

Amazing Google's Secret Turbo Dancing!

If you have any kind of standing as SEO you should know by now that google is turbo dancing all over the place. Authority websites that once dominated keywords are being pushed to nothingness, everything is slowly changing.

I first noticed this when I checked the results of google on this blog you see I could never get the top position in the google SERPs for "all about google adsense" but recently out of nowhere after pushing a LOT of google sites it got to the top! Check out all about google adsense if you don't believe me. But that's not all this evening I checked put my google analytics SERPs and guess what of keywords I rank for? "social bookmark adsense" "google+ads+history" and this one really surprised me "google adsense tricks".

Somehow in all this chaos this blog has managed to come out on top in a lot of things. And even though I was planning on moving it to it's domain soon I am gonna hold out for a while to see what happens. heck who knows I might finally be becoming an authority website.

But some websites are getting the short end of the stick from google users from digitalpoint and webmastertalk are crying foul.

In all most people really don't know what's going on. Is google coming out with new features as it claims on the official google blog? Or has google finally came out with another "google slap" like the one it did a couple of years ago creating the google "sandbox"?

Top Ten SEO Obvious Deadly Sins

SEO is a trade with two sides: one the easy one are obvious mistakes you shouldn't make, these are the deadliest, and another which is the most complicated one that will give you that extra edge is SERPs. The easy ones can be summarized in ten easy and again obvious lists. But no matter how easy every now and then I see a website that terribly violates one of these or perhaps even more. Dooming it to the very end of SERPs. So for the record for everyone out there here they are:

1. Do NOT include your url in your website's title.
I know it may seem cool to let everyone know which website they are on but I think we all know where they have to look in order to know where they are. And to be honest if they can't figure it out heck just leave them lost in the vast world of the Internet. Seriously though this will bring your SERPs even lower since the url of your website will barely be found in your content. Links don't count.

2. Your tile should, at maximum, be 65 characters long.
Keep it short I don't think you have that many related keywords on one page. And remember to cut out ordinary words that you can never even hope to rank for like "it".

3. Do NOT repeat keywords in your description.
You may no think google cares about your description but it does and repeated keywords will get you stupid penalties for no reason. And try to keep it at maximum 200 characters.

4. Again Do NOT repeat keywords in your keywords META tag.
This is just like asking for your website to disappear people.

5. Do NOT join those tacky link exchange sites.
Sure they promise you links, but those links are put on a page with NOTHING but links. So there is no use to you. Instead it'll give you a temporary boost until google figures it out and BAM! next thing you know your website is know out.

6. Keyword stuffing is just plain stupid.
You may be tempted to put nothing but your keywords on a page but if you do tell how it turns ou tin a year or two. I don't think I need to warn any smart guys out there.

7. Stay away from BLACK HATS.
We all have heard of the amazing techniques to get your site on top of the SERPs, but what they don't tell you is how long you are going to keep that top spot. igive i ttwo to three months and you site is BANNED from google. I don't care what anyone says any underhanded trick in my book is crap.

8. Use flash and images SPARINGLY.
The key word there is sparingly. Some people seem to think it's a pretty cool idea to have their whole website as flash. Sure new movies and big starts can get away with that. But an independent website will be just digging it's own grave.

9. Navigation is also for the Search Engines.
So keep them html or php or anything they can see also. I can't tell you how many sites use javascript and flash as their navigation putting a big block on the googlebot.

10. Beyond SEO
The last mistake is optimizing your website for every search engine out there except, oh, that's right the user. After all your work getting visitors from SERPs and when they get there they immediately leave. Because you've forgotten that the whole point of SEO is the user.

It doesn't matter what others think these are the things you need to take care of first. Keep these things in mind and THEN move on to advance techniques. Which I happen to plan on covering extensively in the future.
